Tips to Make Your Clothes Last Longer

How to make your clothes last longer

All of us want to make our clothes last longer. Who doesn’t, right? While it’s not possible to make your favorite outfits last forever, we can confidently tell you that there are different ways to extend their lifespan.

If we can use them for a couple of years and preserve their quality, we will be able to save a lot of money. So, let’s start taking some steps today to maintain them.

If you’re planning to have a sustainable and ethical wardrobe, making clothes last longer must be your first step. As mentioned earlier, it will help you save a lot of money. But that’s not all, it will also help cut your consumption and decrease carbon footprint which harms the ecosystem.

Here are some of the best tips that can keep your favorite OOTDs looking new and fresh:

  • Choose quality pieces

Your clothes won’t last that long if you only buy cheap, low-quality pieces. Sure, high-quality items are a bit expensive, but see it as an investment. If you buy cheaper ones, you’ll probably buy it again after a couple of months. But if you do the opposite, you will be able to use it for years.

  • Use a drying rack

Air drying can make your clothes last longer. Using hot tumble dryers can make your clothes shrink or stretch too much. Other than that, these dryers can increase your electricity bill. So, if you want to save up on bills and prevent your clothes from wearing out, use a dry rack or clothesline. Let them dry naturally.

  • Buy a stain removal pen

Always bring a stain removal pen when going out. You don’t want your favorite white outfit to have stains, right? Then, be prepared all the time. This will prevent any stains from ruining a perfectly good item. You can just wipe it onto the affected area immediately.

  • Consider delicates bags

Just like other clothes, you must also take care of your undergarments. Use a delicate bag, especially for your most fragile underwear pieces. This will prevent the items from being damaged or ripped in the washing machine. Don’t worry, they are affordable and very practical to use.

  • Do less dry cleaning

Dry cleaning is expensive. Other than that, it involves the use of harsh chemicals that can harm the fabric of your clothes. It can ruin your items a lot faster – they will get worn out and the colors will fade quickly. Hence, do less dry cleaning as much as possible.

  • Reduce the detergent you use

Using too much detergent can make your clothes stiff and dull. So, reduce the amount of detergent you use, especially on delicate pieces. Check the label of the detergent product and follow the instructions. It’s also a great idea to add ½ cup of baking soda – it serves as a detergent booster.

  • Fold sweaters

Folding heavy clothes can make them last longer. When you hang them, there’s a tendency for them to stretch and lose their shape. This is especially important for sweaters and hoodies. You don’t want your favorite pullovers to lose their fit, right? So, keep their shape by folding them.

  • Store them in a dry environment

Clothes are vulnerable to too much light exposure. They can easily get damaged if you don’t store them in the right place. Therefore, you must avoid putting them in environments that contain molds, such as basements and bathrooms. Bacteria can grow in moldy places, ruining your precious clothes.

  • Set the iron at the right temperature

Always set your iron at the right temperature. Read its manual and check what is the proper temperature needed for each garment. This is very important because improper ironing may cause shrinkage – or worse – burning of fabric.

On the other hand, if you think that you can stay away from ironing your clothes completely, try to give them a good shake before air drying. This is also effective in removing creases.

  • Skip the softeners
Using fabric softener or conditioner is not necessary when washing clothes. They contain a lot of dyes, fragrances, and other chemicals that can ruin your garments. On top of that, they leave the fabric with a waxy residue. When this wax builds up over time, the color of your clothes might fade.

With these amazing tips, you will be able to make your clothes last longer. Make sure to take good care of your favorite pieces, so that you can maintain their quality, color, and fit.
